Photography Assignment 1

Photography Assignment 1

Advertising

Advertising photography is a genre of photography that is used to advertise products that the photographers take photos of. In advertising photography the photographer is paid for the photos. So advertising is more commercial viability than artistic viability but that doesn't mean that advertising photography can't be artistic as well. The main purpose for advertising photography is to be used to advertise the certain product that they have been paid to advertise.

An example of an advertising photographer is Jonathan Knowles he is award-winning London based advertising photographer. He has worked with a lot of different companies such as Cadburys, O2, Costa and many more. These are some examples of his work with Cadburys, O2 and Costa.

Fashion

Fashion photography is another genre of photography that focuses on the fashion world. So fashion photographers are mainly interested in clothing, models in the clothing and any other fashion items. Fashion photography can be for artistic and commercial viability but it is mainly commercial viability because the fashion photos are used in magazines, online and any other place where they can be advertised.

An example of a fashion photographer is Bill Cunningham. Bill Cunningham is fashion photographer for the New York Times. When Bill Cunningham takes his photos he is only interested in the clothing that the subject is wearing not the subject that is wearing the clothing. These are some examples of his work

Photojournalism

Photojournalism photography is another genre of photography that photojournalists take photographs during the event that is happening and they use and alternative approach where the photographer captures the photos spontaneously to emphasize moments and emotion so that their photos can tell a story by looking at them.  Photojournalism can be for artistic and commercial viability but most photojournalists focus on the artistic side more than the commercial side.

An example of a photojournalism photographer is Alfred Eisenstaedt. Alfred Eisenstaedt is a one of the most famous photographers of the twentieth century due to some of his most iconic photos such as the sailor kiss. Alfred Eisenstaedt has worked with a lot of famous people such as J.F.K, Marilyn Monroe, Walt Disney and Albert Einstein. These are some examples of his work.

Portraiture

Portraiture photography is an other genre of photography that photographers take photos of people or groups of people that show expressions, mood and personality of the subject in the photo. So the main focus of a portraiture photo is of the subjects face which shows their expressions, mood and personality but they also show the subjects body and background as well as the face. Portraiture photography can be for artistic and commercial viability. The commercial side of portraiture photography is when the photographers take portraiture photos of people for family portraits, wedding portraits, baby portraits and others. Portraiture photography can also be artistic by using different photography techniques to make them look more artistic.

An example of a portraiture photographer is Steve McCurry. Steve McCurry is an American editorial portraiture photographer best known for his photograph "Afghan Girl" which originally appeared in National Geographic magazine. The photo "Afghan Girl" is one of the most famous portraiture photographs of all time.

Architectural

Architectural photography is an other genre of photography that photographers take photos of buildings and structures. Some of the architectural photographs are of famous buildings or of interesting and unusual structures. Architectural photography is mainly artistic than commercial because not many people want to buy photos of buildings that they can go and see but they can sell the architectural photos to magazines, newspapers or online pages so that they can use the images on their articles or what they want to use them for.

An example of an architectural photographer is Simon Kennedy. Simon Kennedy is a London-based photographer specialising in architecture and interiors. Simon’s work has been exhibited and published widely, and his worked with The BBC. These are some examples for Simon Kennedy's work.

My Photo

The image progression that I have done is that my first idea was to go to Dino Park (Teesaurus park) and take a photo of one of the metal dinosaur sculptures that are in the park. So I have decided to go for the Architectural photography genre. I have decided to do architectural photography because I knew what to take for this genre and I like this genre more than the others.

This is my final photo which I have taken.

The equipment that I used was my Sony Cyber-shot DSCH300B Bridge Camera to take the photo.

The techniques that I used to take this photo were I used rule of thirds to put the main part of the photo into the bottom half of the frame. I have also took this photo in the evening so I have put the ISO to 3200 so that you will be able to see the image. I have also put the F stop to F7.7.
